Post-Treatment Care for Pediatric Preventive Dental Visits

Proper aftercare helps ensure comfort and effectiveness after your child’s dental cleaning, fluoride treatment, or sealant placement. Follow these simple guidelines to protect their smile and minimize discomfort.

🦷 After a Dental Cleaning (Prophy)

Mild tenderness is normal – Some children may experience slight gum sensitivity for a day or two after a cleaning.
Ease discomfort: Have your child rinse with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in 8 oz warm water) 2-3 times daily if soreness persists.
For lingering discomfort: Give Children’s Tylenol, Advil, or Motrin as directed for their age and weight.

🦷 After Fluoride Treatment

Maximize fluoride benefits:
🚫 Do NOT rinse, eat, or drink for at least 30 minutes—this allows the fluoride to fully absorb and strengthen the enamel.

💡 Tip: Encourage your child to wait before consuming food or beverages to ensure fluoride remains in contact with their teeth for maximum protection.

🦷 After Sealant Placement

Temporary texture change: Your child may notice their tooth feels different—this sensation will fade within a couple of days as they adjust.
Food restrictions for 24 hours: Avoid sticky, crunchy, or hard foods (e.g., caramel, gum, popcorn, hard candy) to ensure the sealant properly bonds to the tooth.
Bite adjustment: If your child experiences ongoing discomfort or their bite feels uneven after a few days, contact our office for an evaluation.
