Post-Treatment Instructions for Crowns, Bridges, & Inlays/Onlays

To ensure the success and longevity of your new dental restoration, please follow these important aftercare instructions. If you have any concerns or experience discomfort beyond what’s expected, call our office at 212-683-2530 for assistance.

After Tooth Preparation

🦷 What to Expect:
Mild sensitivity and tenderness in the tooth and gums for the first 1-2 days is normal.
✔ If sensitivity persists beyond this period, contact our office for evaluation.
✔ If anesthesia was used, avoid eating or chewing until numbness completely wears off to prevent accidental biting of the lips, tongue, or cheeks.

💡 Your final restoration may be placed the same day or during a follow-up appointment, depending on your treatment plan.

Caring for Temporary Restorations

Your temporary crown, bridge, or inlay/onlay protects your tooth while your permanent restoration is being crafted. To prevent damage or displacement, follow these guidelines:

Eat soft foods and avoid anything sticky, crunchy, or chewy (e.g., caramel, gum, nuts).
Brush and floss carefully—when flossing, slide the floss out gently instead of pulling upward to avoid loosening the temporary.
If your temporary restoration becomes loose or breaks, call us immediately for a replacement.

After Final Restoration Placement

Once your permanent crown, bridge, or inlay/onlay is placed:

Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods for the first 24 hours to allow the cement to fully bond.
Mild sensitivity to hot or cold foods is normal and should improve over a few weeks.
✔ If sensitivity persists beyond six weeks, contact our office for an evaluation.

💡 Your final restoration is designed to be durable, but proper care is essential for long-term success.

Ongoing Care & Maintenance

To keep your restoration strong and long-lasting, follow these oral hygiene tips:

Brush after every meal using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
Floss daily, being extra gentle around the restoration to prevent loosening.
Rinse with water or mouthwash to remove lingering food particles.
Avoid biting hard objects (e.g., ice, pens, fingernails) to prevent damage.
