How does KOR Whitening Work?

Continuously refrigerated, high-potency gels, together with a scientifically designed application protocol, deliver predictably exceptional results. Teeth whitening can often be a frustrating, problematic and unpredictable proposition. Historically, whitening system companies have promised ease-of-use, outstanding results and happy patients.

But you’ve probably experienced a gap between what’s promised and what’s delivered. Most dentists providing teeth whitening have been frustrated with a lack of predictability, effectiveness, and longevity of effect, as well as complaints of sensitivity by patients.

Intrinsic tooth color is a result of large natural pigment and stain molecules trapped within the microstructure of teeth. The larger these molecules are, the more chromophores they contain, and the darker the teeth appear. All peroxide gels work by forming hydrogen peroxide as their end product. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down to water, oxygen, and numerous radicals and byproducts known as “bleaching factors” that lighten teeth.oxygenation_00

Optimum whitening results are achieved only when these whitening gels are: fully potent; chemically influenced to produce a high percentage of free radicals (instead of simply oxygen and water); and are allowed extended time for these factors to diffuse thoroughly into the microstructure of teeth. Clinical Research Associates (CRA) as well as other researchers have found that whitening gel in conventional whitening trays is only strongly active for 25-35 minutes. This is due to rapid contamination of the whitening gel by saliva.

Both saliva and sulcular fluid contain an abundance of the anti-oxidant enzyme peroxidase. When filling a set of upper and lower whitening trays with whitening gel, approximately 6.5mg of peroxide is placed in the trays. Saliva is capable of destroying a full 29mg of peroxide per minute! It takes very little contamination of the whitening gel in the trays by saliva to destroy whitening gel on contact.

KöR whitening KöR-Seal™ trays are specifically designed to seal both saliva and sulcular fluid out of the whitening trays. These trays, in combination with KöR whitening gels provide 6 to 10 hours of whitening activity compared to the typical 25-35 minutes of other systems.

The result is a thorough cleansing of debris from between enamel prisms (interprismatic spaces), and within enamel prisms (intraprismatic spaces and intracrystalline spaces), rejuvenating the enamel back to its youthful ability to whiten quickly and thoroughly — delivering truly amazing whiteness.

The Truth About Whitening Gels

Continuously refrigerated from manufacture to delivery at your office.

Heat is the enemy of whitening gel potency…and gel potency is a big key to ensuring totally satisfied whitening patients.

All peroxide based whitening gels are unstable chemicals – they’re supposed to be. This is why they’re able to break down quickly in the mouth, releasing bleaching factor byproducts. The downside of this chemical instability is that all whitening gels start degenerating immediately after manufacture if not kept under constant refrigeration.

The higher the temperature, the greater the degradation process. Warm, or even hot temperatures, often encountered during warehouse storage at chemical manufacturers and whitening product companies, is problematic. Even more problematic is the high temperature (125°F – 165°F) typically encountered in freight truck bays during truck shipment of gels from chemical factories to whitening companies, and from whitening companies to your office. Just think of how hot your closed car gets on a sunny day! This extreme heat often causes severe heat degradation of the whitening gels.

Is it any wonder that you experience such a wide range of effectiveness with typical whitening systems?

As NON-refrigerated whitening products break down and degrade during storage and shipping, hydrogen ions are produced. Those hydrogen ions are acid (pH = potential of Hydrogen). Whitening gels therefore become more and more acidic as they break down, resulting in an ever increasing possibility of sensitivity and pain.

Constant refrigeration virtually stops breakdown of whitening gels.

More importantly, refrigeration protects whitening gels against the potency-robbing damage of heat during storage and shipping. Refrigeration also eliminates the need for chemical stabilizers, such as phosphoric acid, which can increase osmolarity of gels by as much as 11 times. That increased osmotic “pull” on dentinal tubular fluid further increases sensitivity. Those same chemical stabilizers result in a “stabilized gel” when placed in the mouth, so the gel will not break down as thoroughly in the mouth when we want it to.

KöR Whitening is the first company to constantly refrigerate a full line of teeth whitening products from the moment of manufacture, until you receive them cold-packed at your dental practice.

The result? With KöR Whitening systems you get exceptionally effective gels with lower sensitivity and less risk of pain for your patients. When KöR gels (with no chemical stabilizers) are placed onto the warm teeth, they break down with extraordinary effectiveness.
